Una fotografia è una immagine ottenuta tramite un processo di registrazione permanente e statica di unimmagine, proiettata per mezzo di un sistema ottico su un elemento fotosensibile: emulsione chimica per la fotografia fotochimica, ovvero quella tradizionale dalle origini ai giorni nostri, sensore elettronico per la fotografia elettronica, oggi digitale.Il termine deriva dal lingua greca φῶς, phôs, luce e γραφή, graphè, scrittura o disegno, rappresenta la sintesi del processo ovvero disegno della luce.
