Depressive/Suicidal black metal is a progressive and relatively sub genre of black metal. Most depressive black metal bands play slow- to mid-tempo music with a melancholy or cathartic theme. Some depressive black metal bands, such as Amesoeurs, Lifelover and Joyless, eschew the harsh vocals and blasting rhythms typical of black metal for sung vocals and post-punk drumming, usually retaining the heavily distorted, tremolo-picked guitar and misanthropic motifs. Other depressive black metal bands, such as Mortifera and Celestia, play more ormal black metal, but with a greater emphasis on melody, often including guitar lines that sound pleasant or sad rather than evil. Many depressive black metal bands are also considered atmospheric black metal, including Amesoeurs and ColdWorld. In summation: depressive black metal is black metal that sounds more emotional or sad than brutal.
