I was born in Harrisburg, PA and spent my childhood on military bases in the US and overseas. After completing college I moved to Carrollton, GA to teach history and environmental studies at West Georgia College (now University of West Georgia). After two unsuccessful runs for Congress, I finally won in 1978 and was honored to represent Georgias sixth congressional district for 20 years. In 1994, I helped design the Contract with America campaign, which resulted in Republicans capturing the U.S. House of Representatives for the first time in forty years and my election as Speaker of the House of Representatives. During my four years as Speaker, Congress passed the first balanced budget in a generation, leading to the repayment of over $400 billion in debt. Congress also cut taxes for the first time in sixteen years, saved Medicare from bankruptcy and reformed welfare, leading to over sixty percent of welfare recipients either getting a job or going to school.
