Em meados dos anos setenta, a indústria da relojoaria suíça atravessava a sua pior crise de sempre. Em termos tecnológicos, a concorrência japonesa tinha sido suplantada em 1979 com o lançamento do “Delirium”, o relógio de pulso mais fino do mundo, com um número limitado de componentes. Contudo, o acontecimento que marcou a reviravolta na sorte da indústria foi a fundação de SMH, a Corporação Suíça para Indústrias de Micro Electrónica e Construção de Relógios. A sua resposta para a crise foi um relógio Swatch de plástico e muito fino com apenas 51 componentes (em vez das habituais 91 ou mais peças) que combinavam qualidade máxima com um preço muitíssimo acessível. A comercialização desta marca teve inicio em 1983 e desde então o seu sucesso foi aumentando até se tornar o relógio de pulso mais famoso de todos os tempos e The Swatch Group, a empresa-mãe, é a maior e a mais dinâmica empresa de relógios do mundo.
