Sono nato a Bari il 26 Agosto 1958, in una famiglia cattolica e comunista. Penultimo di due fratelli e una sorella. A casa mia, a Terlizzi, c’erano due grandi ritratti, uno accanto allaltro: Yuri Gagarin e Giovanni XXIII; ai miei genitori venne spontaneo trasformare il nome del santo patrono di Bari, Nicola, in quello dellallora capo dellUrss Nikita Kruscev. Già allasilo tutti mi chiamavano Nichi. La politica l’ho incontrata con mio padre e mio zio, quando avevo i calzoni corti, tra i braccianti e i vecchi compagni di Terlizzi. Da piccolo mi piaceva disegnare e scrivere, avevo sin da allora un rapporto vorace e vitale con i libri che prendevo in prestito in biblioteca del paese. Tra le prime letture ricordo i romanzi di Giulio Verne. Ma il primo autore che mi ha formato è stato sicuramente Vasco Pratolini: “Cronaca familiare” è un libro che mi ha molto turbato e segnato.
