Venezuela (nombre oficial, República de Venezuela), república de Sudamérica, limita al norte con el mar Caribe, al este con el océano Atlántico y Guyana, al sur con Brasil y al suroeste y oeste con Colombia. El país cuenta con una superficie continental e insular de 912.050 km². Estos extensos territorios se expresan en una compacta superficie continental, cuya longitud máxima es de 1.493 km en dirección este-oeste y de 1.271 km en dirección norte-sur, lo que contribuye a facilitar la integración y cohesión interna. Cuenta con una amplia línea de costa, que alcanza en el mar Caribe los 2.183 km de longitud desde Castilletes al promontorio de Paria; su forma es irregular y está constituida por numerosos golfos y bahías, entre los que destacan el golfo de Venezuela y los de Triste y Cariaco, y más de 314 islas, cayos e islotes de soberanía venezolana que se extienden por el norte hasta la isla de Aves y su correspondiente zona de exclusividad económica marítima.
